About this Specialty Coffee

At The Espresso Lab, we're proud to showcase Finca Sophia, a remarkable high-elevation coffee farm that has captivated the specialty coffee world with its extraordinary Gesha variety. Perched at an impressive altitude of up to 2,175 meters in the Panamanian highlands, Finca Sophia stands as one of Central America's highest coffee farms, where the extreme elevation promotes slow fruit maturation that develops the complex flavors our customers cherish. Founded in 2008 as an experimental venture by visionary coffee professionals including Equator Coffees co-founders Helen Russell and Brooke McDonnell, alongside Willem Boot of Boot Coffee, this farm represents the pioneering spirit that The Espresso Lab celebrates in our pursuit of coffee excellence.

The exceptional quality of Finca Sophia's offerings has been consistently recognized in prestigious competitions, achievements that affirm The Espresso Lab's commitment to partnering with world-class producers. In 2020, Finca Sophia dominated the Panama Cup, claiming first place in the Washed Gesha Category and second in the Natural Gesha Category, while their Finca Sophia Olympus Gesha shattered records at the 2020 Best of Panama Auction with an unprecedented $1,300.50 per pound. More recently, in 2024, they continued their impressive trajectory by securing 2nd place in the Washed Geisha Category and 5th place in the Natural Geisha Category at the Best of Panama competition—accolades that underscore the extraordinary coffee experiences The Espresso Lab strives to deliver.

Beyond producing exceptional coffee, Finca Sophia's environmental stewardship aligns perfectly with The Espresso Lab's values of sustainability and responsibility. The farm has dedicated five hectares as a buffer zone where nature is allowed to reclaim the land, and its strategic location bordering La Amistad International Park—a protected area spanning the Panama-Costa Rica border—contributes significantly to regional biodiversity conservation. At The Espresso Lab, we believe that truly remarkable coffee must honor both cup quality and ecological integrity, making Finca Sophia an ideal partner in our ongoing mission to offer coffee experiences that delight the palate while respecting our planet.
