About this Specialty Coffee

Hacienda La Esmeralda stands as a beacon in the realm of coffee, embodying the very essence of the Panamanian Geisha. The year 2004 is forever etched in the annals of coffee history, marking the unveiling of geisha coffee's mesmerizing attributes on the farm. With its intoxicating jasmine notes and undertones of succulent stone fruits, Geisha captivated and set an unparalleled standard in the coffee arena. Over the years, Hacienda La Esmeralda's relentless pursuit of perfection has birthed unparalleled microlots, continually evolving in production, fermentation, and drying. Yet, amidst these innovations, their core values and principles remain steadfast. Analogous to the metamorphosis of raw crystals into exquisite gemstones, the Esmeralda Geisha is born from a perfect blend of nature's bounty and meticulous craftsmanship. A harmonious dance of volcanic soil, the embrace of two oceans, and an unwavering passion for coffee craftmanship has elevated their beans to a revered stature, likened to prized jewels in the global coffee treasury.

A glimpse into the past reveals the story of Hans Elliot, the visionary Swede who unified the lands of Hacienda La Esmeralda in 1940. These terrains, now recognized as Palmira and Cañas Verdes farms, witnessed a significant transition under the aegis of Rudolph A. Peterson, a Swedish-American banker who acquired the estate in 1967. Over the years, the estate evolved, transitioning from beef cattle pastures sprinkled with patches of coffee to flourishing dairy cattle terrains by 1975. With coffee cultivation deeply rooted in the Boquete region since the 1890s, the Peterson family saw a golden opportunity to diversify and reintroduced coffee farming. Their first expansion into this realm, Palmira in 1988, was set against a backdrop where coffee was largely an undifferentiated commodity in Panama. It wasn't until the mid-1990s that the echoes of Specialty Coffee began to resonate, heralding a new era.

Our tryst with Hacienda La Esmeralda began in earnest in 2015, when The Espresso Lab made its inaugural acquisition of their coffee at an auction. Ever since that serendipitous encounter, our admiration for this exemplary producer has only grown. Our founder, Ibrahim Al Mallouhi, vividly recalls the momentous day when we first introduced their Geisha variety to our clientele. Setting them apart is Hacienda La Esmeralda's unyielding dedication to preserving the Geisha's innate flavors, having honed the washed natural process to perfection, ensuring each bean's essence remains untainted. Our recent sojourn to the farm, graciously hosted by Rachel Peterson, unveiled a staggering range of coffees that epitomized excellence. We invite our cherished patrons to savor the nuances of this Panamanian Geisha, masterfully roasted to perfection at The Espresso Lab - Roastery.
