About the Producer
The Lamastus Family has been producing exceptional coffee at Elida Estate for four generations, with a legacy that dates back to 1918. Their coffees are cultivated under a truly unique ecological environment — shade-grown, bird-friendly, and surrounded by the pristine cloud forests of Volcán Barú National Park.
Located at very high elevations, the estate benefits from a distinctive microclimate characterized by cool temperatures, frequent mist, and rich volcanic soils. These conditions slow the maturation of the coffee cherries, allowing them to develop exceptional sweetness, clarity, and aromatic complexity.
History
At the turn of the 20th century, Robert Lamastus, originally from Kentucky, established an Arabica coffee plantation on the slopes of the Barú Volcano in Boquete, Panama, at approximately 1,700 meters above sea level.
From its earliest days, the estate produced and exported coffees considered among the highest quality in the world. Today, more than a century later, the Lamastus family continues this tradition, overseeing every stage of production — from cultivation and processing to exporting and roasting their own rare estate coffees.
Estates & Terroir
The Lamastus family operates three distinguished estates in Boquete, Panama: Elida Estate, El Burro Estate, and Luito Geisha Estates.
These farms are located on steep mountainsides along the slopes of the Barú Volcano, one of Central America’s highest peaks, and represent some of the highest coffee-growing areas in the country.
- El Burro Estate: 1,575 – 2,000 meters above sea level
- Elida Estate: 1,700 – 2,500 meters above sea level (the highest coffee farm in Panama)
These extreme elevations, combined with volcanic soil, dense forest cover, and a cool, misty climate, create ideal conditions for producing coffees of extraordinary quality, complexity, and character.
